CUT OF THE DAY: PORT O’BRIEN – “LEAP YEAR”
Named after an Alaskan bay where Van Pierszalowski’s parents met, this California band decided to part ways in 2011. It’s too bad because I just found them and they’re pretty great. At least when Pierszalowski is handling vocals anyway. Every single time Cambria, California’s Cambria Goodwin took the lead on a song, I almost rolled my eyes. Despite sounding a little like Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, I felt she ruined the flow of the album.
“Leap Year” is a hot track off Port O’Brien’s last studio album, 2009′s Threadbare. It’s has the same honest vibe as the rest of the disc. This song currently has no dislikes on YouTube. Probably because it’s awesome. “I Woke Up Today” is from 2007′s All We Could Do Was Sing and it’s a major jam. That year, they were M. Ward’s favorite new band and that song was his fave from 2007. Every time Pierszalowski sings, the song is a total winner. His chill voice makes Port O’Brien sound like a laid-back version of Band of Horses. A wonderfully well-timed band discovery by my friend Alec.
Seriously how pumped are leap year babies? You have to wait an entire college experience to have a birthday party. I would get blackout drunk and barf everywhere like my son did Tuesday night. If you’re born on February 29th, what happens 4 years later? Are you 1 or 4? Weird. If guys were smart, they would get married today to avoid celebrating anniversaries. In honor of Leap Day babies, I’ve decided to edit The Remys in my birthday suit. What a special treat for my co-workers.
