CUT OF THE DAY: DAVID LYNCH – “GOOD DAY TODAY”
For starters, the name of this album couldn’t describe it any better. Crazy Clown Time? This is the very definition of crazy clown time when clowns get all crazy. Fifty minutes of madness from film director David Lynch. D is for dark and it’s also for David. It’s safe to assume that David is dark. I don’t think you should get high and listen to this by yourself. I popped this on as I left work Saturday night and I instantly started driving slower. It made me a little nervous. Dead serious.
Don’t be fooled by the Karen O appearance on the first track, “Pinky’s Dream.” That’s the only time you’re going to hear a voice that sounds normal and it’s still kind of scary. “Good Day Today” has a techno vibe and it’s pretty dope. I also want to have a good day today. “Noah’s Ark” is extremely creepy as the whispers start to set in. “Strange and Unproductive Thinking” is where Lynch did his version of Radiohead’s “Fitter, Happier.” “The Night Bell With Lightning” is straight up instrumental madness. “Stone’s Gone Up” gets us back to the horribly strange whispering for no good reason. It’s one of the few songs with a decent beat that you could potentially bob your head to if you weren’t so freaked out. I can’t begin to explain the title track that follows. “Crazy Clown Time” indeed. I think “These Are My Friends” was actually cool, but the lyrics are so strange and I’m left shaking my head in confusion.
This album features extremely repetitive song lyrics. It’s as strange as one of his strangest movies, Mulholland Drive. It’s worth mentioning that the movie features a dope lesbian hookup scene involving Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. Still not really worth the price of admission. Or was it? What the frig was going on in that movie?
This video beat almost 450 entries in a contest to create the best version of “Good Day Today.” As you can imagine, it’s weird.

TENNIS – YOUNG & OLD
Tennis grabbed our coveted cut of the day status back on February 2nd. It’s no surprise that I’m in love with their new album. Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley have done it again. Their marriage spawns beautiful music. They have a little bit of a She and Him vibe and Moore sounds like Tanya Donelly in her Belly days. I just discovered that Belly was based out of Boston and all the original members grew up in Newport, Rhode Island. That’s where I got married and now I like them more. Hooray. You never hear Riley’s voice at any point during Young & Old and it appears that’s a good thing. Like Cape Dory, this album is great from start to finish. It’s feel good music for any mood.

TWISTA – “WHITNEY HOUSTON TRIBUTE”
Cool song. A sad, but solid sample of “I Will Always Love You.” I wish there was another verse in the middle, but Twista mentions there are 16 open bars for you to add your own verse. Um…what? Despite having amazing rap skills, I left this one alone.
